GTFC Chairman Puts Club's Side Of Story

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/12/2001

MR PETER FURNEAUX Grimsby Town Football Club's chairman has issued a statement in relation to the failed bid to sign Marlon Broomes. The board, manager and player have received a great deal of criticism regarding this issue from fans and supporters and Mr Furneaux has explained the clubs position.

Mr Furneaux's Statement:

"We understand Marlon Broomes has an offer from Sheffield Wednesday which is well in excess of our pay structure.

Marlon recognises the assistance of Grimsby Town in resurrecting his career and despite an amiable meeting with his agent we were unable to finalise a deal that would not jeopardise the future viability of GTFC.

We have taken into account TV income and extensive Board finance when reaching this conclusion.

Our potential income stream has been diminished by the refusal of shareholders to allow willing participants to assist the club.

The Manager has been urged to put proposals to the board which will allow progression."
