Disaster As Broomes Signs For Sheffield Wednesday

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/12/2001

REPORTS coming in say Marlon Broomes signed until the end of the season with Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon ending Lennie Lawrence's bid to keep him until the end of the season. In preparation for Broomes' signing Lawrence agreed a loan deal with Oxford United for Paul Raven.

It seems likely now that the loan deal will be cancelled and Raven recalled. This is not a good time for Lennie Lawrence who was given the OK to sign Broomes if he loaned out players to reduce the wages bill.

That was not unexpected as the board had stated previously that the club was on the limit as far as wages are concerned. Lawrence has had a great deal of money allocated to him during the last two season's amounting to close to 2 million pounds.

The board have reiterated that a club the size of Grimsby Town do not have an unlimited budget and they have committed to keep the accounts out of the red, so a fine balance is required and loaning out players to bring in new one's is part of that strategy.

The fans will be very disappointed by this latest failure to sign a player, as once again, the opportunity has been snatched from us by another club. Broomes was a good addition to the squad and will be missed.
