Danny Coyne Says We Must Keep Our Stars!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/04/2002

DANNY Coyne has called on the club to hang onto their out-of-contract stars with Mick Boulding and Simon Ford two of several first team players whose contracts expire in July. Bradley Allen, Danny Butterfield, Wayne Burnett and new signing Terry Cooke are all those whose contracts are up.

But Danny Coyne told the Grimsby Telegraph that it is vital those players are persuaded to stay at Blundell Park.

"Mick Boulding has been on fire and like a breath of fresh air for us with his pace. We want all of the players to stay and Mick has been excellent for us. The board have got to look at it and try and tie these players down."

"It's a great feeling. I've been saying all along that it would go to the last day and I'm just delighted for everyone to have done it now. When you look at our form over the last few weeks it's been play-off form. We haven't been playing like a team that has been struggling."

"For the last 10 or 15 games, with only Gillingham the exception, I've been virtually redundant considering the amount of work I had to do early in the season. That's credit to Paul Groves."

Simon Ford ended up skippering the side to safety after coming on as a late substitute for club captain John McDermott against Burnley. "I didn't really think about it at the time. But I'll make sure I tell all my mates that I led the team to safety! The young lads were ribbing me about it saying 'who made you captain?' but at least I've done it now."
