El Tel: Clubs Set To Buy British

By: Graham Howes
Date: 11/08/2002

EL TEL has made comments on Ceefax that top-flight clubs will once more be looking to sign British players. Venables cited the economic climate which is currently overshadowing domestic football will be a major factor when deciding between a foreigner and similarly gifted home based player.

One reason for Venables which is changing attitudes is the problem of foreigners increasingly becoming homesick and constant language barrier problems. It is also a broad indication that wages to foreign players have gone through the roof and agents' demands for a cake of the Premiership riches make bringing in a foreigner not a viable option anymore. Already El Tel has been true to his word and recently signed Nick Barmby from Liverpool. The Hull-born player has become Venables first capture to the tune of £2.75m.

If Venables is accurate then this represents a major shift in thinking from top Premiership bosses. Once again the Nationwide's best will be looked at as possible future Premiership players and this has got to be good news to clubs like us. It can't have been healthy for the game to fritter millions of Sky TV money to places like Latvia, Turkey or any other foreign football nations. I have not got a problem if the player is quality - however, how many foreigners in this country are poor just because they were a cheaper option to home based talent?
