Grimsby 1-2 Leicester

By: Richard Lord
Date: 30/11/2002

A spectacular overhead volley by Turkish international Muzzy Izzet 15 minutes from time condemned Grimsby Town to a 2-1 defeat at Blundell Park this afternoon.

Manager Paul Groves made a few changes to the starting line-up from the side that lost at Crystal Palace last week. The player/manager replaced the suspended Simon Ford in defence, and Barnard was drafted into the side in place of Mansaram.

Steve Livingstone started up front on his own, with Campbell reverting to the right and Oster slotting into the hole behind Livingstone.

The opening goal came just two minutes into the game after keeper Danny Coyne made a hash of a clearance. After Izzet's blocked free kick looped up into the air, the descending ball was not tipped over the bar and Scowcroft nipped in to tap home.

The first half was a forgettable affair for the home side, with Leicester dictating play. Campbell was lively down the right but the lack of a second out-and-out striker proved the Mariners' downfall.

The action began in the 50th minute when Frank Sinclair was shown a straight red for what can only be presumed as foul and abusive language. Four minutes later and Oster had drawn Town level following a volleyed cross by Pouton.

Against ten men and in the ascendancy, the Mariners looked the likeliest team to go on and grab all the three points. But 15 minutes from time Muzzy Izzet hooked a spectacular volley past Coyne to give the Foxes the lead.

Although there was no lack of effort in the last few minutes, Grimsby failed to get away a serious shot on goal to trouble Walker, who was also booked for time-wasting.
