Town Sign A Forward!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 09/02/2003

TOWN have today signed American Jake Sagare on a month's contract. On trial with Town the management said they have taken an extended look at his talents and have now made him this offer.

Mariners Net said "The American forward, who comes from the North-West of the USA is said to be lightning quick, though as he admitted himself recently on Mariners World, he found the British game a much faster, more direct style than what he had been used to on the other side of the Atlantic."

"His signing gives Paul Groves another option to make up for the loss of both Steve Livingstone (suspended) and Flash Mansaram (injured)."

This signing also throws up the question of what happened to the premiership midfielder Groves was hoping to sign. Is this still on the books or has it fallen through?

When Sagare played for washington University his record was given as follows:

2000 (Junior): Started 17 of 20 games at midfield … co-team leader in shots on goal with 47 for the year … scored two goals and had four assists for eight points on the year … put UW on the board at UCLA when he took a corner kick from Ben Somoza and headed it in the net ... spurred the Huskies to an 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the fifth-ranked Bruins … his three shots in the game helped UW outshoot UCLA, 18-10 … three assists at California help clinch first Pac-10 Championship … … scored third and final goal in shutout of Gonzaga ... spent summer season playing for the West Region Sports Festival team that was undefeated en route to winning the regional title.

1999 (Sophomore): Made a significant jump in offensive production, tallying four goals and three assists ... was a clutch performer, scoring seven of his 11 points in postseason play ... drove home two goals, including the game-winner, in Huskies' 3-2 first-round NCAA tourney game at Portland ... figured in both Husky goals in 2-1 win over Oral Roberts in NCAA tournament play-in game ... headed in the first off a throw-in, and assisted senior Wes Hart for the game-winner in the 73rd minute ... dished off to Greg Foisie for game-winning goal in 2-1 MPSF Championship win over No. 1 UCLA ... performances against ORU and UCLA earned first-team Soccer America Team of the Week honors ... assisted Kai Carroll for Huskies' third goal at Denver, then netted game-winner in final minute of double-overtime 4-3 win ... started 17 games, including the last 16 in a row ... named the Huskies' most improved player by his teammates.
