The Jevons Mystery! - Update!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 18/07/2003

THE news that Phil Jevons will not be returning as a player is somewhat of a surprise. Jevons and his agent were reported to be negotiating with Everton Football Club regarding an easier settlement of the appearance money that was stopping him playing without a large one-off payment to Everton.

The last report on this was that Jevons had agreed to take a fairly heavy pay cut in order to get back into action and secure a first team place, even if that was only to place him in the shop window.

But the latest reports, which have not yet been confirmed by the club, are that an agreement could not be reached on the terms offered and the stalemate situation will continue unless the problems can be resolved.

Radio Humberside reports that his agent accepted the deal, but the player has said no which means the club cannot afford to play him.

Peter Furneaux said: "We made it perfectly clear in the first place that he's still got a one year contact with us that we will honour. But as we have to pay Everton for appearances and he's on a large appearance money with Grimsby, that, combined with the amount that we pay Everton precludes him from playing for us. The manager is aware of this and will act accordingly."

"For a number of weeks I have been talking to his agent. Even when we were in Ibiza, we had daily conversations where we came to an agreement about what he was going to recommend to Phil Jevons to accept. We were offering him a further year's contract that was part of the deal."

"This was concluded yesterday morning and we understand that Phil has been to see his parents and he's rejected that deal."
