Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Who Said What After The Game!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 03/03/2004

GRAHAM Rodger said that he was very disappointed not to have picked something up from the game. "Even though we went ahead we weren't happy with the way we started."

Our first half performance simply wasn't good enough. We weren't at the races, we put ourselves under a great deal of pressure and conceded a very bad goal from a set piece."

"We were better in the second half but I'm not making any excuses about the conditions - they were the same for both sides.

"I was pleased with the number of chances we created but if you don't finish them then you don't get the results. A couple of players did not work hard enough until it was too late."

"Our first half performance wasn't good enough. Darren didn't start working until the second half. He needs to gain more composure in front of goal. Hockless needed the first half to find his feet, and after that he had two or three good chances."

"Nicky Daws is now on a 24 hour recall."

Missjones said;

"We were lucky not to Lose 6-1 today, can't believe it was the same team we saw only 3 days ago."

Upthemariners added to that saying;

I agree Missjones, Mansaram was awful, although I did feel a little bit sorry for him when he was booed towards the end of the match.

Bright Spot? Lee Thorpe- Did all the work on his own

Baffling decision of the night- Wes Parker on for Simon Ford with 5 minutes left, chasing a 2 goal deficit. Can anyone figure that out?

Iffy-and Chiffy was not pleased! He declared;

What a ***** pathetic excuse for a football team we really are. I challenge Town to take on my Sunday side cos' we generally play it long and Town would fold no probs.

How Mansaram gets into any team, even the reserves, is beyond me. He is without doubt the most greediest player I have ever seen wear the black n white stripes, has no sense of direction, the touch of a leper and the finishes maybe 1 in 15 chances at best.

Hockless played well and I personally thought Lee Thorpe was by far the best Town player. Won everything like Saturday and did the simple stuff, chest and lay off.

Ford, out of position had another stinker as the failure to cope with the long ball was there for all to see.

County were abysmal and a quarter decent team would've buried them. They're number 2 keeper, Garden, looked about 50 years old but must've thought it was his 51st birthday as he had his easiest game between the sticks for an age.

On a final note, I'm sick of certain people saying "town get no support" etc. There were loads of town fans there tonight. The stewards said they were only expecting 200 but I reckon there was 1000 at least but the simple fact is, Town DO NOT deserve the support they get!

Stand up if you love Grimsby??? What a joke. When town do something for me then I'll do something for them.

Limerick_Mariner saw the good and the bad;

Seen 3 games this season, lost all 3 conceded 3 in each.

  • 3 goods things from tonight

    Lee Thorpe, OK not a world beater but worked hard and definitely offers something we've not had for a while in one player - strength, quite good in the air, pace, reasonable first touch.

    Hockless - on right wing, worked hard, good control, a good few efforts on goal.

    Armstrong - strong tackle, put himself about did some talking / organising at the back

  • Three Westons (super mares)

    Ford - on planet Zen in the first half. Reminded me of some of the 7 / 8 year old kids from when I did some schoolboy practices - couldn't really tell whether they were really any good at kicking football because they didn't have a clue what was going on. Always managed to run to somewhere the ball was not.

    Mansaram - Reminds me of me when I played up front for the Inland Revenue team. Best compliment I ever had was "you have great nuisance value - always running into opposition defenders and getting in their way - good elbows." Never had the ball really under control at any point during the game.

    Rodger - Bringing Parker on with 5 mins left as the major tactical substitution

    Board are now living in Disneyland if they think that GTFC is going anywhere but the conference unless there are radical changes to the way the club does business. A cobbled together team of loanees youngsters and players no one wants.

    Need to sign Armstrong / Daws / Thorpe / Rankin (if fit) for the rest of the season at least to ensure we stay up.

    TurboD gets the final word as a Notts County supporter at the match;

    You took an early lead through a gift of a goal, and we looked shaky at the back all night from then on. Your problem was you were even shakier. We took control of the game and p*ssed on you for the rest of the first half, our right back and right winger caused you problems all night.

    You came out in the second half and looked far hungrier, 3/4 of our midfield went missing for 20 minutes, but Jevons and the big black fella (especially) had shocker's to be fair. We gained control again in the final 15 again and could have had a couple more.

    Suppose it's the old cliché about taking your chances, we did, you didn't. You were beaten fair and square by a team playing with confidence. No hard feelings, I hope we both meet again next season in this division.
