Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Gordon Arriving As Cover

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/08/2004

RUSSELL Slade is hoping to bring in experienced left-sided defender Dean Gordon on a short-term contract to provide cover for Ronnie Bull, who is doubtful for tomorrow's clash with Boston after a thigh injury picked up in Saturday's defeat at Darlington.

31-year-old Gordon, a free agent, has spent his whole career in the top two divisions, and spent last season at Championship outfit Coventry City. He started his career in the Premiership with Palace in 1991, before moving on to Middlesborough in 1998.

"With Ronnie suffering after Saturday, I am hoping to find some cover down the left side as quickly as possible," the Town boss told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"We have games coming thick and fast at the start of the season and will need to have a squad to deal with it."

If Bull does not make it on Saturday, either veteran John McDermott or Gordon is likely to start in the defensive back three. Gordon is expected to arrive at the club tonight, and sign tomorrow.

Meanwhile another striker has turned down the Mariners. Exeter City striker Steve Flack has rejected out of hand a move to Grimsby, insisting he wants to see out his contract at St James's Park.

"I got a call last week saying Grimsby were interested. My first response to the offer was 'where the hell's Grimsby?'," Flack told the Devon Express & Echo.

"Family is more important to me than anything in the world - no club will ever come before my family."

Town have several more overseas trialists arriving this week, as Russell Slade continues to search for the last elusive member of his squad.
