Football Mourns a Genius

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 20/09/2004

TODAY football is mourning the loss of a pure genus who captured the hearts of all football supporters around the world. Former Forest and Derby manager Brian Clough died today after a long battle with stomach cancer.

It brought back memories of playing Forest the few times Town did and of all the players who played for both Grimsby Town and Nottingham Forest and who must have learnt something from the great man. Players like Brian Laws, Garry Birtles, and Neil Webb all pulled on the black and white stripes as well as the red of Forest.

The only player who I can remember who came from Nott'm Forest on loan was Brian Rice who Cloughie brought down from Scotland and then framed out to us. His son Nigel was linked umpteen times with the Town job and would have been a good asset if he was a chip off the old block like his father.

Many tributes have been made in the media to the great man who took two relatively unknown clubs of his generation to the height of the football ladder, and who will be a loss to many football fans home and abroad. So we send our condolences to his wife and family who we have in our thoughts at this sad time.

What are your Cloughie memories? Post your thoughts on the Message Board.
