Grimsby 0 Charlton 2

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/09/2004

TOWN lost 2-0 to Charlton in the Carling Cup tonight in a game which provided a microcosm of Grimsby's entire season to date. The Mariners missed a hatful of chances, whereas Charlton scored with virtually their only chances of a game Town almost completely dominated.

Greg Young came into the defensive trio for the cup-tied Terrell Forbes; otherwise the team was the same as that which beat Leyton Orient 2-0 on Saturday.

Town started nervously and conceded an early goal when Danny Murphy scored a spectacular free kick for Charlton. The Mariners then had several clear-cut chances to level things in the remainder of the first half.

They were desperately unlucky not to score when a shot from the ever-dangerous Sestanovich hit the underside of the cross-bar and narrowly missed going in. Michael Reddy also managed to hit a shot wide when he was well placed to score.

The second half was much the same story, without as many chances to Town, but this time Grimsby were denied a clear-cut penalty when Parkinson was brought down in the box.

After a second half of almost complete Grimsby pressure Francis Jeffers then scored a well-taken goal from his only chance of the game.

Once again Town can take heart from their overall performance, but once again will rue their inability to finish off the opposition during their best spells of then game.
