Gigg Lane

Preview: Bury v Grimsby

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 25/08/2006

TOWN travel to Gigg Lane this Saturday to take on a Bury side who pulled off a fantastic win in the Carling Cup on Tuesday by beating Sunderland. But despite their cup heroics, the Shakers are still yet to record a point in League Two.

The Mariners fared less well in the cup on Tuesday evening, falling to a 3-0 defeat at Blundell Park to League One strugglers Crewe Alexandra. However, Graham Rodger has since been busy in the transfer market with one player leaving and two players signing for the Mariners. Ben Futcher joined League Two rivals Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee on Thursday, whilst defender Nick Fenton arrived on a three-year deal from Doncaster Rovers. Midfielder Danny Boshell also signed for Town on non-contract terms, and both will be included in the squad to face the Shakers. Rodger will still hope to further add to his squad in the next few days, with a midfielder still high on his wish list.

Team News

TownBury

  • Graham Rodger will include new signings Danny Boshell and Nick Fenton in his squad to face the Shakers. On loan defender Martin McIntosh will also return after sitting out of the cup tie with Crewe.

  • John McDermott looks likely to miss the game after struggling with a calf strain since the draw with Mansfield last Friday. Gary Croft should continue to deputise at right back.

  • Captain Justin Whittle is also an injury concern with a slight back strain. Graham Rodger will hope that Whittle will recover, but if not, will be forced to pair new boys Nick Fenton and Martin McIntosh at the back. Should Whittle be declared fit, it is McIntosh may well start with Fenton on the bench.

  • Elsewhere, Town have no new injury concerns. Paul Bolland has a knee injury but will probably play, whilst Michael Reddy will continue on the bench as he waits for surgery on his troublesome groin problem.
  • Bury boss Chris Casper has also been busy in the transfer market this week, securing the three month loan deal of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. The son of Manchester United legend Peter played 15 times for the Shakers last season, in a similar deal from parent club Manchester City.

  • Chris Casper will have to decide whether to keep faith with new signing Alan Fettis or immediately install Schmeichel between the sticks.

  • Bury will have to cope without defender John Fitzgerald, who opened the scoring in the 2-0 win over Sunderland on Tuesday, and was sent off immediately after for his goal celebration. Andy Parrish could replace him.

    Last Meeting

The last time the Mariners visited Gigg Lane was Boxing Day last year. An early goal from Danny Reet (now at Mansfield) for Bury was soon cancelled out by a Gary Jones strike after half an hour of play. Town claimed all three points with 15 minutes left when Gary Cohen netted, to keep Town in second place in the table.

    Prediction

Neither sides have been mean at the back this season, so I predict goals aplenty!
