Mariners! - Down Under Style!

By: Geoff Ogley
Date: 19/03/2007

I'VE been laying here in bed, it's nearly 2.00 in the morning, and we, in Western Australia, are 9 hours in front of UK time, and why am I awake? I'm waiting to hear the football results, or, to be more precise, a football result.

I've been a passionate Mariners fan for over 65 years, what is it about this bloody club that keeps me awake each Sunday morning, when, being an old man, I should be enjoying a peaceful nights rest.

It's not as though the club has ever won the FA cup, (nearly, just before the war), or even qualified for any European competitions. No, my seasons highlight has been a 6-0 win away to Boston! How sad is that?

But would I change? I could support Manchester United. They are always in the top 3 or 4 in the Premier League, they nearly always win the FA cup. "Ha" I hear you say, but have they ever beaten Boston 6-0 away?" No, I couldn't change even if I wanted to.

Just when I start to think-why do I bother,-the club lifts my spirits with a marvelous win over Tottenham, an extra time, last minute win over Liverpool at Anfield, or two winning trips to Wembley in the same season. They certainly know how to pull my strings.

Of course, between all of these highlights we have to endure long testing periods, when we wonder if we will remain in the league at all, or even if we will have a club next season. This enables us to indulge on our favourite pastime, abusing the club, the players and often each other on the internet. I mean, who would ever even consider belonging to another club.

No, this is the club for me. I'll be awake at 2am next Sunday. Up the Mariners!
