Beat the Bookies: Week 4

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/09/2007

LIKE the Mariners Beat the Bookies has yet to back a winner this season, but now that one record has fallen hopefully the next one will soon follow!

Home > 2007-2008 Season > Beat the Bookies > Week 4

Town on paper have an excellent opportunity of beating an Accrington team who have lost their last five games, and this week appealed to residents of Accrington to support their local side, the footballing equivalent of a profits warning. Accrington are rock bottom of the league and the bookies make Stanley and the Mariners 6/4 each to win the game, with a draw rated 9/4. I wouldn't have considered backing Town before Tuesday's confidence-boosting 4-1 win, which hopefully will have given Alan Buckley a better idea of his best team and formation.

If 6/4 is a bit too low a price for your liking, how about Dave Mulligan to score the first goal at 25/1, or 8/1 to score at all? It looks quite likely he will start for the Mariners, and if so he can be expected to take at least those free kicks which are within sight of goal. Ryan Bennett is still good value at 50/1, but may not start on Saturday. Both players are worth backing as you will get your money back if they don't feature in the game, or come on after the first goal.

Elsewhere in League Two Morecambe have got off to a great start (certainly in the cups) and head to unbeaten Chester. Morecambe have upset a few home crowds this season already, and are worth considering backing at 10/3 with bet365.

League Two favourites Peterborough have lost two games already this season, and take on Mansfield at home. The bookies think that the Stags haven't got a chance, but their form is not that bad and the 5/1 on offer with bet365 may well be worth considering.

Finally Israel are 10/1 to beat England on Saturday? Unthinkable? You never know!

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Mansfield to beat Peterborough (5/1, bet365).
  • 2. Mulligan or Bennett to score the first goal v Accrington (£5 each, 25/1 and 50/1, bet365).

Previous Bets (1 or 2 bets, around £10 per week each of Rob's own money)
