Where will Grimsby be next season?

Midfielder Joins Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/08/2008

TOWN have signed midfielder Simon Heslop on loan from Barnsley for a three month spell at Blundell Park. The 21-year-old could go straight into the starting line up for Grimsby's tricky opener against Rochdale at home owing to injuries to Alan Buckley's first choice midfielders.

Another factor for Heslop's likely start is the poor display by Grimsby in the 4-0 whitewash to rivals Scunthorpe at the weekend in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup Final. Town were comprehensively beaten by their near neighbours, who this season are playing in League One.

Heslop has only made one appearance for the Tykes but had a successful loan spell at Conference outfit Halifax last season, where he made 30 appearances, scoring 5 goals.

Buckley told the Grimsby Telegraph: "It was important we did something, especially as we are without Bolly and Bosh at the moment. Simon is not an unknown player to us at all - we were aware of him when he was playing at Halifax last year.

"Looking at how we did against Scunthorpe, he has got a good chance of starting for us next Saturday if he impresses in training. He is a bit of everything - a box-to-box player. He is a fit lad, covers ground and is a good footballer. But saying that, if I take part in training next week, there's a chance of me playing as well."

Alan Buckley is still believed to be looking to sign a striker before the start of the season on Saturday.
