Chesterfield v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 02/09/2008

AFTER a confidence improving 1-1 draw at Lincoln The Mariners look to improve things even further against a Chesterfield side who last season proved the turning point for Buckley with two emphatic wins against the Spireites in a competition the Mariners just love.

The Opposition

Overview

Town's unimpressive 1-0 defeat to Chesterfield only a couple of weeks ago gives little optimism for us in a fixture based at the intimidating if only half full Saltergate. Lee Richardson (left) became one of the fans' least favourite managers by the time The Town had inflicted 2-1 and 4-2 defeats on play-off chasing Chesterfield. His constant whinging and incessant moaning at the wrong doings inflicted on his precious team may make for a fiery return for the man in charge of the guys from the land of wonky spires, well spire. Off the pitch things are looking up: the new stadium is getting ever closer to been finished in a retail development close to the town centre and the financial problems which were prevalent in the past also seem to have improved.

The Team
Chesterfield made some wholesale changes to their squad over pre-season with many members of their play-off failing squad being ripped out after all hope of returning to League One straight away had vanished. Danny Hall (Gretna), Darren Currie (Luton, left), Tommy Lee (not the one from the Pammy sex tape, Macclesfield) and Alan Goodall (Luton) all been bought in over preseason to bolster the squad.

One to Watch
Jack Lester. The former Mariner snubbed a return to the Humber after deciding to stay close to his former club Forest and settled for a place in the Chesterfield line up. His constant goals were the lifeline which kept the Spireites in touch of the play-offs, as they battled for the last spot against Wycombe and Rochdale the eventual winners Stockport.
