Loan Keeper Signs

GRIMSBY have signed Preston's goalkeeper Wayne Henderson on a month-long loan deal and will make his debut at Rochdale this afternoon as Phil Barnes has tonsillitis. The 25-year-old has won six caps with Ireland, and has played seven times for Preston this season.

Town boss Mike Newell had been hoping to bring Ipswich 'keeper Shane Supple to the club on Thursday but the deal fell through, and Newell managed to sign the North End keeper just before the 5pm deadline on Friday.

Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "Barnesy has tonsillitis so we didn't want to go into the weekend with just one goalkeeper.

"Wayne has great pedigree - you don't play for your country and be someone like Shay Given's understudy if you're not a good player.

"He's had his injury problems but has been back since November and wants to play football.

"There was no hesitation when I called and he was more than willing to come and play for us."
