Second Bennett Offer Rejected

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 16/06/2009

PETERBOROUGH'S "substantial" second offer for Town youngster Ryan Bennett has been rejected by the Mariners, but with a number of Championship sides interested in Town's 19-year-old captain and Player of the Year Grimsby will do well to hang onto Bennett until the start of next season.

Town Chairman John Fenty told the Grimsby Telegraph: "The second bid was a substantial increase on Peterborough's first offer and it is difficult for a club like ours to refuse such a substantial amount that would probably break records at this level. But we recognise Ryan's potential and we have other clubs like Scunthorpe and Blackpool showing an interest and at least two other high-profile sides at that level and above also keeping an eye on the situation. One of those has confirmed their interest in writing so they may make a move as well."

The record transfer fee received for a League Two player is the £330,000 Sheffield United paid Chesterfield for Jamie Ward, so it will probably take in the region of half a milion to prise Bennett from Town's clutches.

Grimsby have been handed an away tie against League One side Tranmere Rovers in the first round of the Carling Cup. The game at Prenton Park will be played in the week commencing Monday, 10th August. The two clubs met at the same stage last season when Grimsby won 2-0 at Blundell Park.
