Phil Barnes

Barnesy was signed for Town in the summer of 2006 from Sheffield United, where he had been the clubs back-up keeper in their promotion season to the Premiership. He joined Town as the new number 1 replacing the ever popular Steve Mildenhall. He quickly became shunned for his nervousness and inconsistency, though he did prove to us that he was a good shot stopper. In the 2007-2008 season, Barnes was handed the coveted "Fans Player Of The Season" award, for his performances, in the league and cup, and his decent performance at Wembley stadium in the Johnstone Paint Trophy Final against MK Dons. He was eventually released by the club by Mike Newell, towards the end of the 2008-2009 season. He had been ill with glandular fever, but after Newell had brought in Wayne Henderson on loan, he was told he was no longer needed. Barnes joined Gainsborough Trinity on non contract terms and played for them on the final day of the season. In June 2009 he signed a one year deal with Trinity.
