Akpro Set to Leave

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/06/2010

JEAN-LOUIS Akpa Akpro is looking to leave Grimsby Town as he wishes to remain in the Football League. The Ivorian has been offered a new contract with Town, but is actively seeking a contract with other clubs.

Town boss Neil Woods told the Grimsby Telegraph: "We've made a very good offer to Jean-Louis but he has spoken very honestly about his desire to go up a league rather than down a division.

"I would think it is very unlikely he will be here next season It's not what we would like.

"He progressed last season - particularly in the back end - very pleasingly and looked a very good player. But he's looking to go and play at a higher level."

Akpro was signed by Mike Newell but struggled with injury and form for the bulk of last season before coming good at the end of it.

  • Town are also close signing 31-year-old Scottish keeper Kenny Arthur from Rochdale, according to the Grimsby Telegraph.

Grim Rob Says: It would be far better to let Akpro go if his heart is not in playing for Neil Woods and Grimsby. His overall record at Town is poor, and it took him months to get going last year. We cannot afford that "luxury" again from one of our key strikers. There's plenty of other fish in the sea, even if most of them have been scooped up by bigger trawlers.
