Town Frustrate Crawley

By: Rob Sedgwick

GRIMSBY managed what Crawley's last five opponents had not managed to do and that was to prevent the Blue Square Premier League favourites from beating them. Crawley enjoyed the better chances of the two sides, especially after the break, but striker Matt Tubbs was not able to convert them.

New signing Serge Makofo made his debut up front. Watt played out of position at right back with Bradley Wood having to switch sides and play at left back in place of the injured Lee Ridley.

Makofo broke quickly, and beat Mills around 10 minutes. With a clear run on goal for the Congolese, albeit half the length of the pitch, Mills elected to bring down the Makofo, but got away with just a yellow card.

The best chance of the half fell to Crawley, whose free kick from Tubbs was well saved by Arthur.

The second half was dominated by Crawley, but Torres and Tubbs both snatched at their chances when the ball fell to them.

The Mariners though almost had the last laugh though when top scorer Alan Connell almost lobbed the Crawley 'keeper from 30 yards, but he managed to get back and tip the ball over.

The match finished a rare goalless draw, and on reflection was a good result especially given the makeshift back four. Town's next match is probably even harder, away at Luton. the division's other favourite for promotion.
