Peter Furneaux Resigns

FORMER Chairman Peter Furneaux has resigned as a director of Grimsby Town FC with immediate effect. The 75-year-old, who has been heavily criticised following the departure of Vice Chairman Mike Parker last week, had planned to leave at the end of the season, but now felt the time was right to go immediately.

Furneaux, who began at the club as a programme seller, has been on the board for 26 years in various capacities, and held the position of chairman in the 1980s when Alan Buckley was appointed,

In a statement Furneaux explains: "I am standing down from the board of GTFC today to allow supporters to concentrate on the club. It is something I have been considering for some time and not just a reaction to last week's events, though I was disappointed by them.

"I was going to step down at the end of the season but I feel it is the right time to go for both the club and myself."

Furneaux said that the game had changed at board level since he began in the 1980s: "Being a fan is now not all that is required to run a professional football club.

"You need directors to use vast amounts of their own personal wealth and I am no longer in a position to do that."

After Mike Parker's resignation last week there are now just three board members - John Fenty, John Elsom and Michael Chapman.
