Beat the Bookies (Summer): Week 4

By: Rob Sedgwick

THE Czech Republic came up with the goods last weekend to beat Poland and ensure a profitable week. Sadly we picked Ukraine to beat France - if only we had gone for Sweden!

Rugby League

  • Salford -12.5 v St Helens - home win (1.909, Marathon). Salford are on a great run at the moment Even when they have lost they have lost narrowly. They have been given a 12.5 handicap to beat Saints, who had an emphatic win last week at home, but were pretty poor before that. If you are really brave take the home win at 4.33 with Bet Victor, otherwise go for the home handicap and profit with a small away win.

    Tennis

  • Wimbldeon - lay Serena Williams (4.4, Betfair, lay). Laying Serena Williams (i.e. betting on her not to win) is easy money in any tournament these days. She just does not have the consistency or fitness to string enough wins together to lift any more trophies. Yet enough people are willing to bet on her to keep a steady flow of lays on the exchanges.

Now that we've seen all of the teams play you can have a bit of an idea about what's likely to happen. Nobody has qualified after two games, and only one team has been eliminated, which shows how close the groups are. None of the games are easy to predict, and there have not been many upsets either.

  • Czech Republic v Portugal - Czech Republic (5.9, Marathon). Portugal undoubtedly deserve to be favourites but the bookies have made them very firm favourites indeed. There hasn't looked a lot of difference between the two sides so far in the group matches, and Portugal always seem to underachieve in these tournaments.
