Town Concede Late Free Kick

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/03/2017

GRIMSBY'S stuttering season continued with a 1-1 draw at Accrington. Town took a lead through substitute Akwasi Asante's first goal for Town. The Mariners succumbed to a late free kick which saw McKeown rooted to his spot as it went in off the post.

The match was marred by a head injury to striker Scott Vernon who is expected to be out for at least two weeks.

After a quiet first half Accrington almost took the lead near its conclusion when Harvey Rodgers long-shot bounced back off the woodwork.

In the second half Marcus Bignot brought on Asante as in an early substitution and it soon paid dividends when the lively striker drilled in a low shot with his left foot to give Town the lead.

However with a minute to go Grimsby conceded a late free kick and the Mariners once against conceded from a set piece as both sides had to settle for a point.
