Bignot's Sacking Paves Return for Slade

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/04/2017

MARCUS Bignot has been surprisingly sacked by Grimsby Town after just five months in the job. The former Solihull boss, who succeeded Paul Hurst as manager, had mixed results while in charge but will consider himself unfortunate to be sacked after an away win at Blackpool.

Bignot's main legacy has been a massive turnover of players, which many supporters found baffling as the replacements in many cases seemed no better than their predecessors.

Personally I had expected Bignot to last a few months, having lost faith in him some time again, and expected him to be sacked early next season after a probable poor start. So I welcome the opportunity to avoid a wasted transfer window which doubtless would have seen a tidal wave of new signings before weeks of experimental teams and a probable sacking in the autumn.

Former Town boss Russell Slade is strongly rumoured to take over. Slade was overlooked in favour of Neil Woods in 2009, which proved to be a calamitous decision as Woods led Town to non-league football. Slade left Grimsby in 2006 to join Yeovil and has since managed a number of clubs including Brighton and Cardiff, but was most recently sacked after a short spell at Coventry in which he failed to win his first nine league games.
