Amond Strikes Again

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/09/2017

NEWPORT County striker Padraig Amond came back like a bad penny to score against Grimsby for the second year running. Last year the Irishman scored for Hartlepool against his former club and on Saturday Amond scored what proved to be the only goal of the game to end the Mariners' two match winning run.

Russell Slade made brought in Mitch Rose in midfield to play against his former club in place of Luke Summerfield. Newport started brightly and had several good chances in the opening 20 minutes but saves from James McKeown and poor finishing kept Town in the game.

Summerfield replaced the ineffectual Rose at half time in a bid by Slade to bring Town back in the game. Grimsby improved in the second half and Matt forced a save from the Newport 'keeper.

A quick break from the Mariners, with Bairiki Dembele at the fore, sparked the visitors into life early on, and Matt soon forced Day into a save.

Grimsby conceded a soft goal from a long throw-in with the ball eventually making its way to the unmarked Amond who fired past McKeown to give the home side the lead.

Diallang Jaiyesimi and JJ Hooper came on for Town in a bid to strengthen the attack, but Newport held firm to continue their impressive home form.
