Town Struggle at Boundary Park

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/03/2019

GRIMSBY'S slump continued with another goalless game, and the defeat at Oldham leaves the Mariners stuck on 49 points, one point clear of the notional safety target. Goals in each half from the home side were enough to seal points, although Town had the chances to get something from the game.

Grimsby should have taken the lead when the front two combined, and Wes Thomas's header produced a good save from the Oldham 'keeper.

Oldham forced a good save from James McKeown, who denied Alex Iacovitti then parried Johan Branger-Engone's solo effort.

Just before half time, Dennis was played through but he didn't have the pace to trouble the Oldham defence. Oldham went straight down the other end and O’Grady met a cross which deflected into the net to give the home side the lead.

George Edmundson should have added a second after the break, but his header from a free kick hit his own teammate.

Town were then unlucky not to get back in the game when Martyn Woolford struck the crossbar, and then an Öhman header tested Iversen.

But Lang made sure the points were all going to Oldham when he headed in a corner.

Grimsby's chronic inability to score has troubled them nearly all season and the Mariners have now scored less than both of the bottom two.
