Morecambe put the Boot In

GRIMSBY fell to a 3-1 defeat at Morecambe despite taking a first-half lead. Morecambe fought back after the break and got their noses in front. The home side dominated the second half and put the game beyond doubt with an injury-time goal.

Managerless Town made two changes. Pollock and Green came in for Spokes and Gibson, otherwise, Town continued with the 4-4-2 of recent games.

Town got off to good start and took the lead from a Bennett corner kick which was spilt by Halstead and Pollock was on hand to head in from close range from the rebound.

Conditions did not favour Town after the break and Morecambe made the most of the wind advantage, dominating the half. The Shrimpers levelled from a Slew cross which Mendes Gomes headed in. Mendes-Gomes added a second not long after, this time from a Stockton cross.

Town had a good chance in the last ten minutes to level the game. The keeper failed to hang on to a Williams free-kick in the ensuing scramble the ball ended up in Halstead's hands.

Mendes-Gomes turning provider in injury time, setting up Adam Phillips to slot past McKeown in a one-on-one.

Morecambe were deserved winners, although Town had plenty of possession but should have scored more in the first half.

The result leaves Grimsby third from bottom, and with no effective leadership from the manager upwards. Until owner John Fenty departs, the prospect of any improvement seems dim.
