GRIMSBY picked up their first win since Autumn with a deserved 2-0 victory over Altrincham. The Mariners took the lead shortly after halftime from a superb McAtee volley then Maguire-Drew curled the ball into the net with 5 minutes to go to seal the points.

It was a match that Grimsby dominated and Town got the three points they deserved.

Two new signings, Andy Smith and Danny Amos came straight into the back four, with the third Scott Burgess on the bench.

Grimsby had the lion's share of the first half but goals and chances eluded them in the opening minutes, with Alty looking to waste time at every opportunity. Quick thinking by Smith, after a Pearson slip, allowed the full back to make a covering challenge in one of the away side's rare chances.

At the other end, Grimsby's best chance came when Ben Fox headed over from a Sousa cross. Fox then set up Taylor but the 'keeper reacted quickly to smother his attempt. Right at the end of the first half, Thompson made a stunning reflex save to deny Waterfall.

After the break Town won another corner and this time they struck gold. Maguire-Drew's corner kick was initially cleared but fell perfectly for McAtee who struck the sweetest of volleys which was a goal the moment it left his foot.

McAtee drew another save from Thompson, from a not so well-struck volley. The scoreline was always a worry, and a second goal was needed to be certain of the points. A poor clearance fell to Maguire-Drew who curled it into the top corner with the 'keeper marooned on his line.

The victory was welcome, but Town need to follow it up with more points to lift themselves back into the promotion picture. They have a chance to do that next weekend when they face Bromley, currently in a play-off spot, at home.
