Moors the Merrier

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/03/2022

GRIMSBY threw away a 1-0 lead, conceding two goals in the final stages of the match against Solihull Moors at Blundell Park which has damaged their hopes of making the play-offs. The Mariners had been fortunate to go into a 1-0 lead at the break, but had improved in the second half and looked the likely winners.

However, substitutions in the second half changed the game, with Town losing Efete through injury and Solihull's Hudlin was introduced for Rooney three minutes later. Hudlin went on to equalise when he turned in a rebounded shot and rose to a cross in the 89th minute to head Moors in front.

New signing Gavan Holohan came straight into the side in midfield and Jordan Maguire-Drew made a surprise start after his sub appearance at the weekend.

Solihull started strongly and had the game's first chance when Maynard headed over from an early corner, and Sbarra also had a shot blocked. Grimsby though took a first-half lead in their only moment of quality in the first half when Amos and Holohan combined then pulled the ball back to Clifton to convert at the far post.

The goalline boosted Town at the break and they went on to be the dominant side in the second half, with Harry Clifton hitting the post and Maguire-Drew also shooting wide from a good chance.

Efete was forced off injured, with Pearson coming on for Grimsby and Hudlin came on for the visitors soon after. Before long Crocombe made a save from Dallas but the ball rebounded to Hudlin who levelled the game.

With it looking likely that they'd have to settle for a point, Town fans were devastated when Solhull broke with a minute to go and crossed for Hudlin to head the winner.

Once again Grimsby's inability to get many points against the teams above them has cost them.

Town have another chance to bounce back from defeat when they take on Dagenham, one place below Grimsby, at the weekend in another game at Blundell Park.
