10-Man Town Overcome Bromley

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/09/2024

GRIMSBY ground their way to a 1-0 win over Bromley at Blundell Park but Bromley came desperately close to equalising with a dramatic injury-time effort that bounced off the underside of the bar.

The match was a welcome three points but Town's afternoon was marred by an injury to Charles Vernam, and the sending off of Green for a second yellow late in the game.

Unchanged Grimsby started very well and had two great chances right at the start of the game. A Bromley mistake led to a 2 on 1 breakaway with Vernam and Svanthorsson. Vernam did the right thing passing to the Icelander, who didn't quite get enough power on his shot, which was saved.

Superb play by Khouri halfway through the half led to another chance for Vernam who couldn't keep his effort down. Vernam, who looked like Town's most creative player, went off after half an hour with what looked like a hamstring injury, and on-loan Barrington replaced the winger.

Well-organised Bromley looked dangerous from set pieces and long throws, and Eastwood had to make a good save to deny a Topalloj volley that came from a long throw.

Bromley made mistakes on a few occasions which the Mariners never exploited until Green was fouled in the penalty area near the start of the second half and Rose scored from the spot.

Bromley had prepared their subs even before the match kicked off again, and from that point, Grimsby were very much on the back foot. The dangerous Cheek had a good chance but hooked the ball wide, then Bromley were given a lifeline when Green was sent off for a second yellow.

Bromley pressed forward, with a generous 7 minutes of injury time, and looked to have scored when Dinanga steered a cross onto the underside of the bar and the visitors almost scored from the follow-up, with the ball eventually cleared.

But Town hung on and will lick their wounds and prepare for Carlisle away next weekend.
