Well Beaten at Braford

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/01/2025

GRIMSBY continued their poor start to the year with a lacklustre display at Bradford. The Mariners went into the game a place above the Bantams in the table, but you wouldn't have thought so on the game, which the home side dominated.

Artell rotated his squad again, with Warren, Davies, Barrington and Rose coming in for Cass, Green, Luker and Pyke.

Bradford looked the more threatening in the first half when Town spent much of the game defending, with Wright proving hard to beat when they did break through. The Town keeper made saves to deny Ciaran Kelly and then saved with his feet when a defence-splitting pass saw Sarcevic burst clear, and Wright also saved the follow-up from Pointon.

Town conceded just before halftime when Baldwin found space on the right-hand side and had time to pick out Richards with a looping pass for a tap-in on the far post.

Things got worse straight after the break when McJannet made contact (albeit slight) with Sarcevic, which the ref deemed a penalty. Smallwood put City 2-0 up from the spot.

Town looked to have a lifeline when McJannet made amends with a near post looping header from a Denver Hume corner. But Town didn't grasp the initiative and Bradford soon picked up where they left off and started to look the most likely to score.

With 20 minutes to go, Pattison was allowed to run through the heart of the Grimsby defence and drill a low shot in off the post.

Grimsby created little over 90 minutes and a home win was well deserved.

Town have struggled against the top sides but have a chance to continue their improved home form in the next two games, but against Blundell Park, against high-flying Notts County and Chesterfield.
