Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Mighty Mariner Week 7

By: The Mighty Mariner
Date: 03/10/2000

Grimsby's mascot, The Mighty Mariner, starts the week black and blue after switching girlfriends on a free transfer. The week begins on a high as the Mariners win in the first leg of the Worthington Cup tie against Wolves, and ends on a low as they go crashing of out of the cup in the return leg.

The Mighty Mariner's Weekly Diary

Tues 26th SepThank God for the restorative powers of Germoline. I don't know what it is in me but I seem to have the ability to bring violence out in women. Some blokes bring out love but I'm the opposite. Thank God Emma isn't violent. She came round yesterday after I'd explained things to Karen and drove me to casualty but the arm is just badly bruised. Fortunately the eye can't be seen inside the mighty mariner suit. Tonight is the rearranged Wolves home game so I'm on duty. Good job Karen didn't break me arm.
Weds 27thOh wow what a great night. what a great game. A 3-2 win over Wolves was terrific and such a good game. we brought on this youngster called Rowan. Looked about 12 years old, same as Owen looked for Liverpool when he was about 19. Good omen theta. Rowan scored too. I had a great time despite a low crowd. There's a few missed a good game last night.
Thurs 28thMade a rare appearance at work today. It's handy being just part time except on the wages front. Took some doing explaining the injuries but put it down to 'footie training' and they all believed me (not!!) mind you most of them know how prone I am to getting beaten up by women. Everyone chuffed at the wolves win and they think this is the beginning of something big. Rowan is a star name even though he's only scored once. I'd like to think he'll be great but lets put things into perspective eh. One goal is hardly Maradonna.
Fri 29thEm's birthday so we had a night out. Victorian House near the Parkway. Terrific volume of traditional English food. Well stuffed I was. Emma wasn't so impressed. I think she had other thoughts on her mind but I was too full to raise a finger let alone anything else.
Sat 30thBarnsley away. Thought of going but we never do any good there and I got soaked last time on an open terrace in the rain. Had flu for two weeks after I recall. Spend the day in town shopping for some new colour co-ordinated kitchen stuff. Ems moving in you see and she loves purple so I thought I'd get purple cups and mugs and things but it isn't a popular colour. I got a purple toaster though and a wash basin, so that's a start.
Sun 1stDammit. Got up and forgot to say "white rabbits, white rabbits grey hares" as a good luck sign for the new month. Instead I swore when I burnt me hand on the frying pan. Could be a bad sign for the mariners that. I predict no points in October…. sorry folks. Need to be away sharp to move Emmas stuff in and empty her flat. Now I know you're thinking this is sudden but do you honestly know what true once-in-a-lifetime- love is? I do. I've been there before!
Mon 2ndTook Emma to bed and listened to the Wolves game on radio five. What a dire load of tosh we have sunk to. 2-0 down before we have a decent shot on target? Oh dearie dearie me. Thank god we've got eleven days with no game to get a few more players fit and maybe a decent signing. Meantime Emma was a bit stunned at my wonderful full set of purple plates, and purple plastic handles cutlery plus purple teapot, sandwich toaster and bread-bin. The thing is I thought she'd said "I like Maroon" when she actually said "I like the room". Ooops! I don't really mind it's just a bit heavy when you eating a fry up next morning after a skinful the night before. Thank God I never started the painting. The gloss purple can go back tomorrow unopened.
