Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

It Is My Responsibility Says Lawrence

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 23/10/2001

"THE responsibility is mine and there's no cheque book here like at other clubs. That's an option not open to us. Here we've got to get on with it and manage and coach and I have to turn it around. It's hard because this is just about the worst run we've had since I was here."

"What they must not do is go into their shell and go through the motions on the pitch by running about but not really being in it. I've got to help them. We are having trouble defending and we are vulnerable to the ball over the top. Neither can we get enough pressure on the ball - especially against the sides who play a 3-5-2."

"I have to help them and come up with some answers. We're always playing against a team with two or three outstanding players in this League, but we have to do better than we're doing."

Lennie Lawrence taking responsibility for the poor results lately.

Lawrence also told the Grimsby Telegraph that he believes his young side's high-tempo start to the season is taking its toll and will rest the out-of-sorts Stuart Campbell for tonight's clash.

"I think the way we set out to play at a high tempo is taking its toll. It was very effective at the start but it took some doing and we are struggling now. Campbell is the best example of that and they are struggling, people do, and that's why he needs a rest."

"The standards of the first division get higher and higher and the first three months of the season, where games are squashed together, must favour the big clubs with bigger squads. Stuart has done absolutely fantastic for us but in the last three or four games he's looked tired."

"The difference this season is that the players are younger and they haven't been through this before. Campbell, Pouton has been in and out all his life, Jevons, Rowan, Butterfield and Menno, none of them have got a great amount of experience and 100 games under their belt."

"Gally has been strong and is playing as well as anybody and Grovesy is suffering through frustration more than anything else."
