Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Dr Kildare Grimsby Needs You!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/11/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE said today that the Town players on the injury list are to have extra evening treatment sessions in a bid to get players back in action as the Mariners are in an injury crisis with 12 key players in the treatment room.

"I'm that concerned with the injuries that we're starting evening sessions starting tonight. They've got to come in at 7.00pm for treatment," said Lawrence to the Grimsby Telegraph.

"I think by the end of the week there will be a few back, but I can't have it like this. We need everybody to be fit, not necessarily now, but we are lucky we have only got one game a week."

The probables to be fit in time for the weekend are Paul Groves and Marlon Broomes with Wayne Burnett and Alan Neilson as possibles.

"What happens when we play that Cup match against Arsenal. We've got Burnley on the Friday, Arsenal on the Tuesday and then Man City at home on the Saturday. How are we going to cope with the same 11 players."

"We must have people fit and I've never done this before - or if I have I can't remember - but we can't have it. There's always six people in there. A lot of them aren't long-term. If it breaks, we'll be all right, but if it doesn't..."

"We are going to do everything that's humanly possible to get them back in action. I'm anticipating three or four to come out tomorrow."

Steve Livingstone, David Smith, Michael Jeffrey, John McDermott, Ben Chapman, Steve Croudson and Phil Jevons are also on the injured list with Livingstone and Smith long term injuries.

On the Arsenal Game "I said when we played Liverpool that we'd need a miracle and that if we played them 20 times we'd lose 17, draw two and win one. We won our one and now we have to go to Highbury and hope lightning can strike twice."

"The only difference from the Liverpool game is that I'm not sure if Arsenal's strength in depth is greater than anybody's. They had eight internationals out on Monday and it will be similar against us."

"It seems a strange thing that we are disappointed to be only going to Arsenal. I understand that because Old Trafford is easier to get to and we'd have got more tickets. Old Trafford is the place everyone wants to go to support their team, but Highbury is a fantastic stadium and we've got to make the most of it. They've got the best pitch in the country - bar none."

The Arsenal pitch is the smallest in League football, but Lawrence believes that it will be of little benefit to Town.

"With the speed of that Wiltord I don't think that it make much difference. Those two strikers who played, Wiltord and Kanu, would get straight into most Premiership teams outside the top five."

"It will be interesting because the game against us comes only 48 hours after they United again at home in the Premiership."
