Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Awards Night On-Line

By: Mike Worden

I DIDN’T know what to expect from the on-line coverage of the Awards night. Curious, I found myself tuned into Radio Humberside’s internet coverage of the event from the Winter Gardens.

The power of radio is in its ability to conjure up images. I had imagined an Oscar type ceremony with John Tondeur interviewing the great and the good of English football as they stepped out of their limos onto a red carpeted Kingsway. Would Sven arrive with Ulrika or Nancy? Would international superstar Menno have dyed his hair specially for the occasion? This would be ‘grab a grammy’ in the home of ‘grab a granny’.

The reality was a couple of hours of studio time filling, interviews with players, replays of match commentaries and about 15 minutes of the actual award presentations at the end. Tim Harvey revealed that people were being turned away at the door. A black market for Player of Year tickets, who would have thought it? The interviews with the players was perhaps the most interesting part.

The loan stars were absent but many of the usual suspects were questioned by John Tondeur. Michael Boulding revealed that he wants to stay at Grimsby and that he hopes to be here next season. He said that playing first team football was important to him at his age. Bradley Allen was perhaps the most candid, indicating that Groves has spoken to him earlier in the day and that he thought that Town would make him an offer of some sort. He also revealed that, despite speculation, what he said to the TV camera after scoring against Burnley was a message to his daughter, Phobe.

And then it was to the awards themselves, and there were a fair view of them. The equivalent of the lifetime achievement award went to the man who has spent his lifetime in the PA box at Blundell Park, Ron Wylie. Danny Coyne was presented with The Fishy award. Michael Boulding beat Phil Jevons to the goal of the season award for his solo effort against Crystal Palace. And then the big ones. Simon Ford took the young player of the year prize, whilst the main award of the evening, the supporters player of the year went to Danny Coyne ahead of Pouton, McDermott and Groves.

And that was it. No Halle Berry style emotional acceptance speeches. In fact there weren't many acceptance speeches at all. Radio Humberside closed down as the Abba tribute band were brought back on and partying late into the Cleethorpes night began.
