Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

I Will Fight To Stay Here!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/07/2002

TRANSFER-LISTED duo Danny Coyne and Phil Jevons say they will fight for their future at Grimsby Town. Jevons said no one will force a move on him while Coyne was clearly angry at his treatment by the board.

"I don't want to go anywhere - of course I don't" Jevons told the Grimsby Telegraph. "I was shocked when Grovesy told me and it seems a bit harsh to do something like this. There's nothing I can do about it, as regards being on the list, but a move can't be forced on any player and I'll have to see what happens. I understand that the club are in financial difficulties but this seems like a drastic measure."

Coyne said it was business as usual as he prepared for the club's pre-season opener at Brigg tomorrow: "It hasn't sunk in yet and I'm just getting on with training. As far as I'm concerned I'm a Grimsby Town player until somebody tells me otherwise. I'm shocked and surprised. That's all I want to say about it."

Both Everton and Cardiff are rumoured to be interested in Coyne.

Jevons, claims he is not the top earner with Danny Coyne and says there is concern that Groves is not getting board backing.

"The lads aren't happy with what's happened. The squad is short as it is. We know it's going to be a struggle, but when something like this happens the lads don't know what to make of it. Grovesy explained to me that it's a financial decision and not a football one and he says it hasn't changed his opinion about me. I know this is nothing to do with Grovesy."

"I'm looking forward to this season and I want to establish myself. At first I was shocked and really disappointed, but the manager has reassured me that it's nothing to do with football. That will help me accept it but I still don't know how I will feel when it sinks in.

"Grovesy has told me that it won't affect his team selection and I just have to shrug it off and get on with it. At the end of the day I want to stay and do well for the club, the fans and myself. I'd rather stay here than go anywhere else which won't be beneficial for my career. I feel a part of this club and I get on well with everybody."
