Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Best So Far - Groves

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 09/10/2002

GRIMSBY Town boss, Paul Groves, was pleased with the Mariners display against Ipswich last night, which was the best of the season, three days after being beaten easily by Reading." Last night's performance has to be up there with the best this season"

Groves talking to the Grimsby Telegraph said: "Now the standard is set and have to play that way every week. We spoke about our pride after Saturday's game, but now the lads have shown they can play against the best sides in this division".

Last night Groves had to put out a make shift side with all the injuries Town had, but he heaped plenty of praise on his new recruits "There were some excellent individual performances out there. There were one or two players on Saturday, who came in for a little bit of criticism, but they came up with the goods in this game and I'm delighted for them."

"It wasn't just a big win for us, it was a big win for the fans too. We haven't given them a win or too many goals and there haven't been many reasons for them to get behind us."

"At last we've given them the light at the end of the tunnel and there's a reason to get behind us now." Steve Kabba showed last night that Town cannot afford to lose him when his loan period is up at the end of November and Groves said about him, "We are doing all we can at the club to keep him longer and that's the reason we've brought him here. I'm pleased he got a couple of goals and I just hope he can continue to play first-team football here."

In the second half Steve Livingstone got a standing ovation when he replaced Darren Mansaram and Groves said" I'm delighted for Livvo he's come back from a very bad injury and I was worried for him when he took a knock but with his experience he'll carry the other players with him"

Looking forward to the away game against Watford on Saturday Town's injury crisis isn't getting any better with both Kabba and Mansaram both rated doubtful For Saturday Alan Pouton is nursing a bit of a knock and Kabba has a hamstring problem related to his back. Judging by what happened before I think he'll miss out.

"Darren has also got a tight back but it's too early to say if he will be okay for Saturday."
