Chuffed To Sign - Gary Croft

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 14/06/2006

IF anything, the comments made by Gary Croft in the Grimsby Telegraph today, gives us some understanding how the players feel about Graham Rodger's appointment as manager.

He avoided criticising Slade's tactics but he did make reference to playing styles which seemed to suggest that Croft would prefer a more open style of football.

Croft told the GET; "I am chuffed to sign up again and glad it is sorted early. I can now relax and look forward to next season. It will be interesting because we have a new manager and will no doubt have a few new faces as well. I think it will be different from last year.

"I played with Graham and have seen another side to him as coach. But he could be different again now he is his own man in charge. I know he will want the team to play in his own style and hopefully that will make a difference. "

"Of course, we are in the business of winning football matches, but it is nice if you can entertain as well and I think Graham has already said he wants us to be like that. I'm sure whatever happens, the fans will be waiting to see how it pans out."

"Some will be reserving judgement, I'm sure, but if we get a good start, maybe we can get the crowds back in at Blundell Park and challenge again."

"We went close last year but ultimately missed out. Maybe the speculation surrounding the manager (Russell Slade) didn't help. There was always speculation while he hadn't signed a new contract it was in the back of our minds."

"To be honest, it wasn't a great surprise when he moved on because managers have ambition like players do. He was given a chance to further his career in a higher division, so good luck to him. "

"But that's in the past now - we need to focus on Grimsby and what is happening at Blundell Park next season."

Those words should bring some encouragement to fans. If one reads between the lines, it would seem that the players are onside and looking for a better style and performance and that is what the fans are demanding.

We should be looking forward with confidence now. There certainly seems to be enough of it at Blundell Park and that is very encouraging.
