Statement From Chairman John Fenty

By: GTFC
Date: 12/06/2006

AFTER returning from a hectic week in Portugal at the Football League AGM, I have to say I am a bit surprised at some of the negativity surrounding our club.

Beating Derby, Spurs and giving Newcastle a good run, being in the top 3 for most of the season, seconds away from an automatic promotion, then beat rivals Lincoln twice in the play-offs on our way to Cardiff.

Are they good reasons why a minority are rubbishing the new campaign before it gets under way?

To suggest, as some are, the appointment of our new manager was to save a few quid could not be further from the truth.

Grimsby Town Football Club needs continuity and people who want to be at Grimsby. After cruelly missing promotion, is it logical to appoint an outsider who just wants to use Grimsby as a stepping-stone. We had many applications for the post, the majority of which have been failed managers elsewhere.

We avoided the managerial merry-go-round for the simple reason we believe the right man for the job was already in the building.

Therefore, cost did not come in to it, logic did.

Questions over the reserves performances

The reserve team serves to progress certain areas of the club, we are rebuilding a Football club and that takes time.

Quite deliberately, the playing budget last season was invested into a small squad; the objective was to attract higher paid individuals and quality into the first team.

The policy left us short in numbers of first team players available to play in the reserves side. In addition, youth players and trial players appeared in the reserves sides as we looked to find new talent, not to forget key players out on loan, Miles Chamberlain, Nick Hegarty and Alan Lamb, who all gained first team football experience at other clubs.

We will continue to look for new talent to trial in the reserves; also offering a platform for the youth players to step up a level earlier in their career helping to bridge the link between youth and the first team.

Evidence points to our youth set up doing very well. They beat Walsall in the Midlands Floodlit Cup final and also finishing well in their division.

At this stage of the season, we would be obliged of those with negativity towards the club to give us all a chance. Maybe reflecting on how close we were to a promotion and who took a part in the management of that.

God Bless Oxford and Rusden & Diamonds - they do have something to moan about

Freezing Ticket Prices

Against the backdrop of rising operational costs and increasing player's wages, we have held off increasing ticket prices, in the hope that the magnificent support shown towards the end of last season will be back at Blundell Park for the start of the new campaign.
