Needed for Rob |
Hanging on a Thread!

HAVING just read poor old Rob Sedgwick's latest attempt to undermine Alan Buckley's revival of the Mariners I am left wondering whether we need to rely upon science to prove the existence of multiverses or simply leave it to him to create his own.

Contemporary scientific opinion is divided but a credible school of thought is that our view of a universe of singular reality is a misconception based on our ability to think no further than the point from which we base our own, biased observations. Rob Sedgwick certainly needs no encouragement to trumpet far and wide his own misconceptions. For him, reality is a simple given - it seems to be "we are Grimsby - we are alone in our ability to move from one to ten in the realm of achievement unhindered by the reality which surrounds us" - so if we don't win every game our ability to achieve the impossible is a failure by our own impossible standards.
What hangs on a thread is not Alan Buckley's tenure in the job but poor old Rob's tenuous grip on reality.
What about the facts.
- A tremendous turn-around in the quality of the squad over the last year.
- Anyone who actually watches the games can see the difference - quality players - quality football - not the final product by any means but anyone, in a mind that still has a tenuous grip on the real world, will admit is a quantum leap forward from the squad AB inherited.
- This could well be the first time - since Alan Buckley was sacked - that the quality of the team has actually improved. Most grounded people understand that improved quality precedes improved performance.
This should a web site that is committed to supporting the Club - supporting a way forward not trying to emulate a second rate tabloid reporting format that may succeed in achieving self gratification for the author but does nothing for the prospects of the Club itself.
This web site could do a great deal more for the Club it is meant to support. It should not be its mission to be an impartial observer - or self seeking hack - but to use its efforts to promote the club.
It is impossible to watch this team play week in and week out without both admiring the progress made and without sharing the frustration of the manager, the team and the Club itself for the difficulty in placing the final pieces of the jigsaw.
I can remember not more than a few months into AB's tenure that Rob gave in to his hysterical tendencies and called for his sacking - this was followed by a superb run which almost led to play-off speculation. And not even an apology!
Well Rob, if the men in white coats turn up (and they must be just round the corner) don't let the fact that AB will still be in his job after they have you securely restrained. It may be pointless to urge you not to stop taking the tablets - from the tenor of your report it appears you have none to take!
However, there is a therapy at hand. Forget the pointless obsession with "beating the bookies" (they are bound to win, they probably - even now - have an odds-on bet that you will be sectioned long before AB is sacked). Put behind you a "career with the tabloids" fantasy and look on the bright side. An improvement today, perhaps another one tomorrow, even better the day after and - who knows? we could become at ease with progress that takes a little longer but is the better for it.
