Slade Gets Target Man

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 17/01/2006

RUSSELL Slade has signed 29 year old Huddersfield striker Junior Mendes, on loan until the end of the season. Mendes was one of Slade's target men and he will now be joining the Mariners much to the displeasure of Northampton Town.

Although his position is that of a front man, he can and has, played in midfield. He was a youth player at Chelsea in his younger days, before moving to Scottish team St Mirren.

Whilst at St mirren he was placed on loan at Carlisle and Dunfermline but returned to his own club where he spent most of his time on the subs bench.

He was out of contract in the summer of 2003, and he was looking for a new club when Mansfield, who had been relegated, made an offer for him and the club let him go.

The following season, Mansfield made the play offs but were defeated on penalties against Huddersfield, but he impressed the Huddersfield boss who signed him a few weeks later.

After spending just over a year there, he was loaned to Northampton Town as he was surplus to requirements at Huddersfield and Northampton are keen to make his switch permanent.

It remains to be seen if that will happen or whether Russell Slade steps in with an offer if he shows promise during his loan spell with Town.

Goals
St Mirren: 6 goals in 20 starts.
Mansfield Town: 14 goals in 61 starts.
Hudderfield Town: 6 goals in 16 starts.
