Come on town! Bit of a weak bench but what can we do? Would look good when we have the full squad.

Looking forward to the match now. So glad the football season is back!

Missing 6 players who would arguably all be starting today. 3 points today would be massive. Come on Town!

Shows what a good job PH has done that with 6 players missing this still looks a stronger side than we had many times last season.

Surprised Walker misses out completely - we never usually put a bus keeper on the bench.

Any ideas how I can get the commentary on an iPhone? Used TuneIn App last year which let me listen to digital stream of Humberside but it's just cut out as unavailable.

We seem more physical and aggressive than last year.

Brown and Connell have both started well. We've had a few decent balls in the box but not got on the end of them.

Two promotion favourites my @rse....booooorrrriiiiiinnnnggggg...no pace in either side.....no goal threat in either side...neither keeper worked in 45 mins......no indication on this that we are any better equipped than last season.

On the plus side...Connell still has a nice touch if a little rusty.

think we are doing allright, unlike the above moaner!! we have 6 players out for goodness sake! defence looks solid, doig marshaling well, jack mack looks a little lost, hasnt beaten his man as of yet , AC and LJL up top looking okay considering they havent played together, alan is a very intelligent player, would certainly take this at 90 mins, feel we can win the game as they look poor, but Jesus christ moosey get a grip man

Not too bad. Look very solid at the back but lacking a bit of understanding going forward. Very impressed with Magnay and Brown. Paddy doing his job well but their formation is stifling MacKreth. Connell looks off the pace but that's to be expected. Reckon we'll take something here.

Just remember we are at half strength, so don't judge our season on this game.

Rovers probably the slightly better side at half time but neither creating much, I'd be surprised if this didn't finish 0-0.

Both teams look quite cagey. I imagine the pressure is firmly on Rovers since they're the home side and expected to be right up there at the end of the season.

If we can nick a goal it'll be interesting to see how their crowd reacts. I reckon they'll get on the players' backs and make it really difficult for them.

No. I have watched enough pre season to know it aint gonna change and they look poor to me...two sides devoid of pace and both toothless. Boring 45 mins.

pretty even, both sides snuffing out each other's threat. Reckon one goal will win it. Mackreth looking lightweight, Defence looking good - Magnay looks pretty good. Brown's a bit of a thug (I like this) and Connell looks rusty but the classiest player on the park.

Not a bad first half performance at all, very workman like by Town.  Brown having a good game in the middle, The Shop looking  a handful up front.  Donnell and Mackreth are Bering closed down quickly when they get the ball, would like to see Mackreth taking his fullback on a bit more but in fairness he isn't getting many opportunities because he is helping the team by getting behind the ball.

Personally think our biggest miss is Paddy being on the left, arguably our best player in pre season in the centre. Bring Winfarrah on and put him in the middle

Personally think our biggest miss is Paddy being on the left, arguably our best player in pre season in the centre. Bring Winfarrah on and put him in the middle

Someone at last...thinking strategically.

I must admit I'm disappointed to see that we are still not creating chances.  I definitely think we need to explore the otions of a striking coach as Paul seems to be very defensively minded.

Every club in this league would want ljl in their team.
Honest.

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Ok people.......ask yourself this question...and this is my biggest gripe with Hurst.....what are we doing to actually win this game? After 45 mins of no chances.
We are completely bypassing the midfield, aiming for the shop to flick on to an unfit, hardly played , slow striker..... i bet they make the first sub..

I understand but the bench is very weak to make much an impact.

maybe winfarrah on the left paddy in the middle with disley off.

Showed his lack of composure there, that's the sort of chance a Sunday league centre half should at least get on target.

Hope he goes out and scores one know or it could haunt him for the rest if the season.

These are the games we need to grab and win...thats what champions do...much rather lose 1-0 at least trying to win it, being positive, than take 1 point by doing nothing.......oh look....another sub for them....still nothing for us...

Yes 1 point in a 3 point system is 2 lost...at 0-0 in a game where the opposition dont look capable of scoring losing 1 point by attempting to get all 3 is positive......sitting for 1 point against a team which look completely toothless is a waste of 2. We will get games where escaping with 1 point is positive...today isnt one of them.

Think we've done well defensively but disappointed with us going forward. Too many players not having an impact on the game. Connell has disappeared.

A few on here seem to have forgotten we are playing the bookies favorites away from home with 6 players missing, a bunch of youth teamers on the bench and a striker short on match fitness who signed yesterday.

Even with a full squad, a point would be a decent start today.

When Jennings failed to score last season everyone said it was due to poor service.  But if LJL doesn't score enough it's cos he's rubbish....

What happens if we really go for it and end up going one nil down? Could easily end up getting battered

Given we're playing the favourites to win the league away from home, with 5 first team players out (all attackers or centre backs) I don't think we've done too bad.

Jesus, this has been awful.

There's a crooked street in Grimsby Town
It's a well worn path I've travelled down
Now there's ruin in my name, I wish i'd never got off the train
And I wish I'd listened to the words you said....
...Don't go down to Freeman Street
Don't go down to Freeman Street
You'll be lost and never found
You can never turn around
Don't go down to Freeman Street

Pleased with that 0 - 0 with 3 players injured, 3 suspended, fair result away from home.

Looking forward to Tuesday night!

I want to be positive and relatively happy with a point but everything looks the same as last season, we don't create chances.

Attacking coaches needed desperately.

Good point so well done Town,  that but that was a long 94 minutes. Great stream though.

Good result, thought we did well considering we were away from home against the title favourites with 6 players out.

well the main headlines are someone misses a sitter who we better not name and we played average and got a point.

hmm sounds familiar.

I want to be positive and relatively happy with a point but everything looks the same as last season, we don't create chances.

Attacking coaches needed desperately.

We are missing arguably our 2 most creative players in Nielson and Arnold, don't panic just yet.

Bristol Rovers at home didn't look any better than us away from home with some key players missing.  A good result I think.

Boo Hurst out. We couldn't beat the favourites for the league away from home with 6 players out. Everyone knows the league title is won on the first game of the season and the other 45 games don't matter.

Good result that. On paper one of our hardest games of the season and some horrible injury problems meant we looked a bit blunt going forward. Still had two very, very good chances though.

Thought Doig, Boyce and Brown were outstanding. MacKreth will be more threatening against narrower teams.

Happy.

Until Thursday it was the defence I was concerned about, but they did really well so I think a point is ok. Could have been different if we'd been able to inject some pace at the end via Arnold, Hannah or Pitbull so again I'm happy with a point there

One positive from that; Rovers were no better than we were. If they're the title favourites then we shouldn't be too far behind them. Still think that was horrible entertainment mind.

Not a terrible start to be fair. We didn't do a lot but then neither did they.
Nothing going forward, expected more from mackreth
Lennell has to put his shot.on target. He does that and its in, 2 points gained.

Well there isn't a just back thread yet. So I'll go over what I saw. Firstly I think a point is a great result in the circumstances and there will be times this season when we realise just what a good point it is away from home to the favourites.  Magnay looked really good and got forward well also. Thomas looked extremely fit, defended well and got forward well with some great crosses that we saw maybe not quite often enough last season.  Makreth looked very uncomfortable and appeared to want to get rid of the ball with a hoof every time he got it, but we've seen what he can do so look forward to seeing him more, however in the same breath, it was good to see him defending well and working hard to get back and help Magnay and the team out.  Brown was bloody everywhere and looked brilliant. John Lewis good game just a shame with his finish. Could have won the game but could have lost also on the chances. Delighted with a point.

Gotta be satisfied with a point considering the circumstances.

Very similar to what we got last season really, very few clear cut chances and LJL missing a sitter. Defended well though and there's not much to be scared about if Rovers are favourites.

Good enough in the circumstances.
Worked hard, not enough quality on the ball, in fact poor at keeping the ball second half. That might be better with Nielson and Arnold in the team.
Defence looked solid to say that it was a patch up job.
Terrible miss by LJL though the same could be said for the Rovers bloke.
Take a point now against a side likely to be around the play-offs.

Poor game involving two poor attacking sides...at least we can claim we had four attacking options unavailable.  Bristol are favourites as they are a well supported former league side, nothing to do with their quality. They looked poor to me, easily beatable and i would be suprised if they make play offs if that was their first team.

To be champions we need to go and beat teams like that, yes under strength but no indication of a positive move by Hurst as the game just drifted away.

Agree with those taking the point as a good result... We didn't fall short last few seasons because of draws away at title rivals. We fell short because of defeats at home to nuneatons, Hayes and yeadings and Salisbury types. The next two matches will tell us much more about our title credentials than this one has.

Aswad, Brown and Magnay looked good. Considering four of our main forward options were out we did alright, could have nicked it but looked functional rather than full of flair. Away from home with injuries against the second biggest club in the league and we get a creditable draw, decent start.

Agree with much that others have said. I got up early here in Atlanta, Georgia to watch, and enjoyed the game even though clearly both teams were trying harder not to lose than they were to win.Nobody was taking many risks. Totally understandable, especially for Town away from home with so many first teamers unavailable and a very inexperienced bench. I thought Paul Hurst managed the game very well under those circumstances. Of the new players,I really liked the looks of Brown, and Magnay and Boyce looked very promising too. Can't really judge how effective Connell will be as he has not even had the opportunity to train with his new team mates yet. A point is a good result today. Onwards and upwards!

What was he realistically expected to do with so many forward players out? There were no forwards on the bench. Clay isn't a game changer and that left us with Winfarrah who is still a teenager who could come on as a forward option. With a full strength team we'd have had Hannah, Paddy, Arnold/Neilson/Pittman to choose from to make a difference which might have got us a win.

Don't really see how people can moan given how depleted out squad really was today?

Connell was clearly unfit, as for John-Lewis is anybody really surprised? It's no secret that the bloke can't finish. He's a difficult one because he works his balls off for the team, but the chances keep falling to him and he keeps wasting them.

Scott Brown is going to be vital this season he has a bit of everything strong tackler, good at corners, good passer he's a player we have missed the last few years we just need to keep him from getting to many bookings and getting suspended.

Pleased over all. no one played bad, in fact over all everyone did well. Like many saw LJL missed the chance to  give us the points. He does a lot of good work and gives 1oo% , but how can you keep missing what was basically an open goal from 5 yards

Neilson was here last year and we had no service so why should this year be any different.  Every year we sign players who we believe will provide but they do not.  To me this now seems to be less about the players and more about the management style.

That's a good fixture to get out the way. I expect Bristol will improve on that showing as their new players settle in. Like us today they lacked an attacking threat. Town squad worked hard all game and could (maybe should have) nicked it, but hey an away point is always good. We need to get more points at Blundell Park and the next 2 games give us a chance to get some points on the board. Given he has only just arrived, I thought Connell, although a bit rusty did ok. He takes up some good positions and read the game well. His one effort in the first half was well hit and on target, but well blocked. Tired in the second but pleased we gave him for a while. I like Lennie but yes if his chance had fallen to Connell it would have been dispatched. With a patched up team it shows they can all do a job.

Thought Magnay was very average, why leave Connell on for so long when clearly not in the game after 60mins. At leasty at the end when he did take him off, stick one of the young ones on to chase and harry there defence for the last 10 mins, not another midfielder. Brown goes off with a cut that takes 5 mins to sort out, why not just bring on Clay/Winfarrah for fresh legs then, instead of playing for so long with 10 men (if he does not think Clay is good enough to play to 15 mins against Bristol why did we sign him). thought defence did a good job, Lenny usual hard work and Mclaughlin good touches when he got on the ball. Looks like the same boring negative set up as I watched numerous times last season. Good to get a point but Bristol were rubbish.

Not too bad.  Bristol R didn't look as if they had anything much to shout about.  Our new players seemed fairly comfortable although Connell didn't seem to be in the picture at all in the second half.  Agree Aswad had a good game.  Very pleased with a clean sheet, as that was a tough game on paper and psychologically, although not as tough as I expected, in reality.  Looking forward to seeing Shaun and Scott Neilson back in the team asap.  Lenny looking very tired towards the end.

Neilson was here last year and we had no service so why should this year be any different.  Every year we sign players who we believe will provide but they do not.  To me this now seems to be less about the players and more about the management style.

Like everyone is saying , patched up team , got a point from potentially a team who will finish in the top 5 . Early doors , first game . Tactics are the key so expect more tinkering ,
Think I'm going to wait a few games before I make a judgement on players or management .

I would have expected him to do...........something!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has built the squad, a squad with little back up up front, he has had to bring in two loan players before the season has even started because his squad, entirely his squad, is not sufficient.
He did not try anything to go and win the game, they made three subs and they had the better of the second half, we just absorbed and made a defensive substitution in the last few minutes against a team who hardly managed a shot on target in 90 mins.

Pleased with both the result and the performance.

On paper this is one of the toughest fixtures of the season. To comfortably earn a draw with so many injuries and suspensions is a fine result. I thought we looked pretty solid all round and will be very difficult to beat this season.

Well done lads.

And how great was it to se Alan wearing the shirt once again!

A promising start.

Pleased overall with a point I would of taken that beforehand and having watched the game I'd  say if that was a league 2 fixture then you would have 2 teams on show that are going to be in a relegation battle, but seeing as we are not in league 2 and the fact the Bristol rovers are the favourites then this league really is wide open, a good point gained looking forward to tues nite.

Pleased over all. no one played bad, in fact over all everyone did well. Like many saw LJL missed the chance to  give us the points. He does a lot of good work and gives 1oo% , but how can you keep missing what was basically an open goal from 5 yards

The same way he had a break on and just kicked the ball to a defender when all he had to do was control it, draw him and play Connell (I think) straight in on goal. He looks good running and jumping but we get no end result.

I don't understand those saying Hurst should have pressed for a win at the end.

At this stage of the season, it's going to help build confidence in the squad to go away to a fancied club and get a hard earned point.  Conceding a late goal would have left everyone deflated and put undue pressure on for the home games ahead.

Man management.

I'd hate to work for some of the posters on here!!

It was obvious that some of the players were tiring towards the end, but Hurst felt he needed to leave the experienced heads out there to secure the point rather than pitch in a young, inexperienced player. That seems like a pretty good choice to me. We will certainly need to be a bit more ambitious in the next two games, though.

Acceptable result with half our team unavailable.

Thought defensively we were solid, only really having that Taylor one-on-one as a chance against us. Doig particularly good for me. Boyce was steady too but still smacks it out of play unnecessarily too much for my liking. Thomas got better as the game went on and Magnay was solid.

Mackreth didn't really offer anything in the way of creativity on thr ball but he worked hard and closed down high up the pitch very well.

Key thing to take from the game is how opposition teams will have much less time on the ball in midfield with Scott Brown in there. Thought he was very good. Gets in peoples faces but can also play on the ball.

I think when we integrate Nielson, Arnold and Pittman into this side it could be successful.

Got to agree with the more positive posters generally, point decent with so many key men out. Plus Rovers fans well up for it (apparently they had heavily reduced tckts, anyone know for sure about that?).  But as much as I want the Shop to become a Town legend we have to be honest and say he has to score! I was already jumping up and down as I did not believe it could be missed. He works hard and was generally good today but chances like that need to be scored to give us the extra 2 points in tight games like today to win this league.

Also think it is a bit false to call Rovers favourites I think, bookies fear getting blown away by large support if they gave them long odds so kept them short, but I doubt Rovers will trouble the top of the league this season. To be fair the various Rovers fans I talked to (all very friendly which was nice!) All said they would take playoffs right now as a v good season and think they are probably gping to be at this level for a few years yet.

Still definitely a satisfactory start which we need to build on on Tuesday!

Under the circumstances with the suspensions and new additions to the team a point away from home on the first day of the season against a fancied team is a very good point imo.

Now for a home win Tuesday!

Some negative posts on here unsurprisingly!! Let's put this in a premier league to help you along.... had Arsenal gone to Chelsea first match of season missing 5 first team players would the fans be satisfied getting a point.... hell yes!
They have a manager that some fans now believe should go (as some on here believe Hurst should), a board that is not well liked for not financially matching others (similar), playing favourites for league away from home getting a point they would be chuffed not some on here.
Get a bloody grip and back 'your' team or urine off and go watch Sky Sports!

Well done town today a solid start and some positives from new players to build on. Roll on Tuesday

6 first team players and a striker who joined us last night and a striker who has never played with any of these players and is not match fit.

But we weren't at the conference level version of Chelsea, they are more like the level of Villa-small budget, on the decline, constatnt change of manager, small playing squad, Arsenal would expect to win.

Yes good point away from home BUT looks like its going to be another season of boring Hurst football.
Disley needs to be booted to the bench and replaced in CM by McLaughlin
Mackreth is dog sh1t. To lightweight, runs in straight lines and is predictable. Think hes a bad signing.
LJL really holds back this team and will cost PH his job in the end. For all LJL lovers hes sh1t
The rest of lads put in a good shift and did real well.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Under the circumstances a good away point, Rovers were poor but are favourites on size alone, whats the betting that FGR, Barnett and Wrexham will wup them as we would if we had a decent bench to change things

Well if Bristol Rovers are the favorites to win this league, after todays game, I would say Town will walk this league.  They put out a full team, we had a mish mash team strung together at the last minute, and did not lose.  How their keeper kept out that Paddy deflected shot showed it would not be our day today, but the defense held out, and kept the first clean sheet of the season.

Cant wait to see how we do when we have a fully fit squad

Wow, nice to see a player judged and written off after one competitive game. I actually thought that whilst attacking wise he was limited today, he protected Magnay very well. I think we'll see more of him at home on a wide pitch were he can run at defenders with space.

And yes, all injured players will not be ready for Tuesday night

Rubbish!  He was being expected to do too much with over hit passes in the first half, but grew into the game, stopped them threatening down the left and when we tried to hit them on the break he showed excellent pace.  While I think of the new signings Brown will be the star, doubly so after an excellent game today, I am sure he will be a v. good signing over the course of the season.

In my view, utter garbage. He was man of the match by some distance. Brown helped a lot by giving him
the freedom to roam. Don't understand some negativity on here about Magnay, thought he did well as did
the whole defence...apart from Macca, perhaps, who looked unusually unsure on a couple of occasions.

Thought Town played with the greater composure, which augurs well for the rest of the season.

Dis MOM you have to be joking, hardly ever in the game, our fans obsession with supporting the selections of Dis and LJL are amazing IMO as I feel they are perfect squad playes but for town to progress both need to be replaced as first choice selections.

I have nothing against Diz but I think he has started from where he left off last season 'junk'. Hes past his sell by date and the quicker PH sees this the better.

Brown looked great, and I thought Boyce put in a solid performance at the back.

Starting to understand now why folks are so down on LJL now though - I don't doubt his effort and commitment - it's clear he's putting in 110% every time you see him play, but he just can't seem to put it together to put the ball in the back of the damn net.

On the whole I was reasonably reassured seeing the game today - can't wait to see what we play like with a full strength squad.

In defense, we where rock solid today, genuinely surprised by how good Magnay was, when he came i expected him to be a rotation player but my word he played good today. Boyce and Doig looking good and Aswad grew into the game as it progressed.

In midfield, Brown played amazing probably best player, the times where Paddy came in from the wings he looked good in my opinion should be starting instead of Disley, Mackreth looked good but had minimal options to show what he can do.

In attack... well what do i say, LJL missing that sitter as one of his biggest fans i have to say if he isn't scoring chances like that this season get him out the team, where as with Connell, what he was attempting was right but it wasn't paying off.

On the whole, impressed with our performance today, will only grow on today when we get out injuries/suspensions back!
