The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Cod Widower of the Week

Every so often we interview the long-suffering partner of a keen Town fan. Watching and reading about football can consume a lot of time, which can be a frequent bone of contention between partners. This week's Cod Widower(!) is Dan Taylor, from Sutton in Surrey.

Fishy:
Tell us a bit about yourself.

Dan:
My name's Dan Taylor. My other....ahem, sorry....better half is Sarah and she's a Mariners season ticket holder with her dad and her sister. She doesn't get to watch 'em much at the mo as she's at Uni in Stoke. Always going on about my own footy obsession, Sutton United. Yeah and you thought you lot had problems!!! She says we're 'crap'. A little harsh methinks! She showed me this section on the site a while back and I thought it would be funny. And besides, you didn't have any Cod 'Widowers' on there. Equality and all that! I live in Sutton, Surrey by the way. That's sort of between Wimbledon and Croydon.

Now, people of Grimsby, read the answers of a soon to be extremely dead Sutton fan..........

Fishy:
Do you support Town yourself, perhaps another club, or do you have no interest in football?

Dan:
I follow my local side, Sutton United. But then again I suppose that covers both parts of that question!

Fishy:
Has your partner ever taken you to a game, when, and what do you think of it?

Dan:
Only one game so far. At Crystal Palace. And Grimsby won 1-0. Which was nice 'cos the missus was very happy and I hate Palace! You have no idea about the sacrifices I made that night. I missed a Ryman League Cup match at Staines for that!!! And it cost me 18 quid to get in. 18 quid!! That's 2 games watching Sutton! Apart from that, I thought Grimsby played some good football. I'm due to make my first visit to Blundell Park soon. Barnsley are playing I think.

Fishy:
How big a part do GTFC play in Sarah's life?

Dan:
I'd say they're important to her. She's always happy when they win. Unhappy when they lose. She might be a 'girlie', but she knows her stuff. She might not admit it, but I think she really misses her Saturdays watching the Mariners. Nah, I KNOW it. She really misses 'em when dragged along to watch my lot!

Fishy:
Would you rank Sarah's interest in the Mariners as obsessive, fanatical, healthy, moderate, or occasional?

Dan:
Hers is healthy. I'm the fanatic! She loves her team and it's clear that she does. All my mates admire her loyalty to her local side.

Fishy:
How often a week do you think Sarah thinks of something related to the Mariners?

Dan:
At least 2-3 times a week I suppose. Or whenever they're playing. She also talks to her dad on the phone a lot about 'em, so it's probably a lot more really.

Fishy:
Who has the deciding vote when there's a football match on TV that clashes with something you want to watch?

Dan:
Seeing as both our teams don't tend to get much coverage on the box, it's normally a pretty mutual thing. Just so long as it's not bloody Chelsea I'm not too fussed.

Fishy:
What do you do when a Town game is taking place?

Dan:
Er, I'm normally watching some crap Ryman league game somewhere. Or a mickey mouse cup game with several hundred other nutters. Unfortunately for my dear Sarah, she's sometimes with me!

Fishy:
How often does Sarah wear a Town shirt in a typical week?

Dan:
I'd guess a couple of times at least. I know she wears it about on campus, but she hates being mistaken for a Newcastle fan. She's always saying "they think I'm a geordie" when she wears it out. She also wears it when at footy with me. I think that's her way of saying "No. I'm not a bloody Sutton fan ok?". Then again, everyone else is probably wondering who the Newcastle fan is! (Just kidding oh-light-of-my-life!)

Fishy:
Does Sarah read the newspaper from the front or the back?

Dan:
Back! She might be a girl, but she loves her footy!

Fishy:
Is it just Grimsby Town, or does Sarah have other sporting teams or individuals they are passionate about?

Dan:
The England national team. She likes rugby too. So, I'd say the England RU side as well.

Fishy:
How long after meeting Sarah did he first mention the Mariners?

Dan:
Er, straight away! She was taking the piss out of my team on the internet. She was studying in the USA at the time.

Fishy:
Do you resent Grimsby Town taking up such a large part of Sarah's life?

Dan:
Nah! It's nice to go out with a woman who's actually passionate about the game and actually goes to footy for reasons other than to check out the 'talent' on the pitch. Dunno whether she'd say the same about my beloved Sutton though!!!! (Especially not the 'talent' bit.)

Dan
