The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

LL: The Blackest Day!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 01/04/2001

Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence said the defeat at Carrow Road had made it the "blackest day since I took over. Not just because of the defeat, but because virtually all the other results went against us with Huddersfield, Stockport and Crystal Palace all winning."

With Norwich scoring in just six minutes and the Mariners snatching an equaliser, the game looked winnable by either side.

But both sides failed to take their chances until the 73rd minute when Chris Lewellyn who had previously missed a sitter took advantage of a defensive error and slotted home the winner leaving Town with just two points off the relegation zone with all the sides below them having matches in hand.

"We are now just two points off the bottom three and it will take a massive effort - both physically and mentally, to get out of trouble now starting next week when we play Tranmere" said Lawrence in the post match interview

"That is now a must, must win game. I'd say it's the biggest game Grimsby Town have had for three or four years.

"The game itself was poor and it looked for all the world like a draw. But they've taken one of the two chances that came their way in the second half and, aided and abetted by some poor defending by ourselves, have come away with all three points."
