Handy/Burnett Countdown - Six Trialists Due

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 29/06/2001

IT APPEARS that Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence will be looking to a final showdown with Peter Handyside and Wayne Burnett regarding their future at Blundell Park. In talking about his plans for next season, Lawrence indicated that he would be sorting it one way or another.

Announcing that six players will be arriving at Blundell Park next week, he told the Grimsby Telegraph, "If we cannot resolve them then we will be looking at bringing in a couple of Bosmans," referring to Handyside and Burnett.

"...On Monday there will be six players coming in on trial ..."

"There will certainly be some action. We need to get this thing up and running. On Monday there will be six players, foreign and British, coming in on trial with a view to loan deals. Things have gone a bit flat lately and we need to step them up a bit."

Handyside this week has been linked with second division Stoke City, after three Scottish Premier sides (Dundee, Aberdeen, and Livingston) were reported to be amongst a number of clubs poised to make a move for the Dumfries-born defender, who is available on a 'Bosman'.

There has been no mention so far of new players being bought, which could mean, that the interest in Cornwall may have dissipated leaving the question of a striker still in the air. The inability to score goals over the last two seasons clearly calls for some action on that front but so far no announcement has been made although there could be a couple of strikers among the trialists coming in.

With Lennie Lawrence getting back behind his desk next week, it seems certain that more news will be forthcoming.
