Handyside Agrees Terms with Stoke City

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/07/2001

STOKE CITY manager Gudjon Thordarson has revealed he is on the verge of signing Grimsby Town’s 26-year-old defender Peter Handyside. The Scot had talks at the Britannia Stadium yesterday and terms were agreed with the Potters, with the formality of a successful medical on Monday yet to come.

Thordarson told City's official web site: "Things went very well and we reached agreement on all the important issues. He is a very good player and would be an excellent addition to our squad."

Lennie Lawrence had held 11th hour talks with the former Scottish Under-21 International to keep him at Blundell Park after nearly a decade of representing the Mariners, and for a while looked like having an outside chance of succeeding.

However it was not to be and the news that Handyside has chosen to drop a division is a major blow for the Grimsby manager, who has been otherwise succesful in keeping the nucleus of his squad intact over the summer, as well as making two notable permanent acquisitions in the form of Stuart Campbell and Phil Jevons.
