Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Grimsby Town 1 Gillingham 2

By: Richard Lord
Date: 25/09/2001

IT'S NOW four games without a win for Grimsby Town as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat by Gillingham this evening at Blundell Park. A goal in each half for the visitors was enough to see them collect three points, despite a consolation goal scored by Bradley Allen late on in the second half.

Again it was from a set piece that the Mariners conceded from. Player/manager Andy Hessenthaler swung in a free kick that was headed past Coyne by Chris Hope from the edge of the six yard box. The visitor's second goal came about from an unusual and inexcusable mistake by captain Paul Groves after his soft pass was intercepted by Marlon King, who drilled home from the edge of the box.

After coming on as a substitute in the second half, Bradley Allen opened a way back into the match for the Mariners when he slotted home from 12 yards after an Alan Pouton through-pass. Gillingham had chances to win it against Town who were reduced to 10 men when Lennie Lawrence had used all his substitutes and McDermott had to leave the field through injury.

Marlon Broomes was preferred in defence to David Beharall and Alan Pouton made a return to the side after missing the clash against Stockport. Grimsby were largely ineffective against a tall and physical Gillingham side who kept the ball for long spells. Again it was the defence that let Lawrence's side down and when 2-0 down it proved to be a mountain too high.
