Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Get It Right Says Groves!!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/02/2002

Grimsby manager Paul Groves has issued a statement today saying he never did consider Danny Coyne not joining the wales squad or that he had 'backed down' by allowing Coyne to go. "Never at any stage did I say that Danny could not go. There was nothing to back down from!"

"When Danny was called up for the Welsh squad, I did have to give myself time to think of all the implications for this football club. Everyone at the club - the players, staff and fans, and myself were delighted for Danny."

"But we are in the relegation zone, and effectively have one keeper available - Stevie Croudson is carrying an injury and it is very doubtful whether he could play the remainder of the games to the end of the season if Danny was injured."

"Danny knows the situation better than anyone, and he is a professional through and through - on the field and off it."

"He and I discussed the situation in a professional manner, and involved Mark Hughes in our discussions."

"When we had all talked things through the decision was made, and Danny will join up with Wales after our match at Watford on Sunday." END

Billo says: If there was no doubt about Coyne joining the Welsh squad, why was there a need to have a 3 way discussion with Groves, Hughes and Coyne? Groves did say "When we had all talked things through the decision was made, and Danny will join up with Wales after our match at Watford on Sunday."

Maybe it was that which misled the press into believing there was doubt!
