Graham Rodger Talks About His Future!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 17/04/2002

GRAHAM Rodger, Paul Groves' assistant manager, explained today that his position with the club is not yet decided and talked about the job since Groves was made manager and the task they faced, saying "When we took over, we said, 'if we have to go to Millwall and win, we'd have taken that."

In an interview with Mariners Net, the official site he continued: "We'd have taken that from day one. I think Millwall were second or third at the time, but that's the situation the club was in. So to have achieved it with a game to go is full credit to the players. They were nothing short of magnificent. It was a slow start. Obviously the Portsmouth result got everybody up, and confidence picked up straight away. Personnel dictated a system we weren't particularly comfortable with" referring to the 3-5-2 system that was used in the early games.

"There's a lot of work that has gone on behind the scenes to try and secure some quality players, and those that have come in have done very well for the club. We were probably out three or four nights a week and targeting players, looking at teams that we were going to be playing against. But it's a great job."

Graham is still technically head of 'Football in the Community'. "I took a four month leave from that office, The verbal agreement that I had with the football club ceases on 21 April. My situation is very much up in the air, and it remains to be seen how that is resolved".

Grimsby Town fans would like the pair to continue as a team and Rodger commented: "It's fair to assume that we'd love nothing better than that. First and foremost in my opinion, the manager has to secure his future with the football club. If he thinks I have something to offer, then he may consider offering me something. Until that comes, it's very much up in the air."
